RESULTS FROM UNDER-15 LEAGUE 29TH APRIL
Both teams started to play more effective floorball with some early
passes delivering easy goals however tighter marking in defence by
all
the players is needed before we can reduce the number goals at our
end
of the pitch. Both teams lost more matches than they won so we are
still on the learning curve. But the absence of 3 top players and
the
injury of a 4th during the morning, did give the less experienced
players a chance to grow and as the day progressed the team
performance was noticeably improving with several very close matches
by the end of the day. Unfortunately we weren't able to record players
goal 'assists' and so it wouldn't be fair to publish the actual
scorer's tallies as their goals were often completely set up by
another player.

Farnham Fireballs are British Under-15 Champions!
After 4 years of training, Farnham’s teenage Floorball team
beat the Ilmington Arrows 4-3 in a tense final to win the 2011 National
Youth Cup played in Gloucester on 2nd and 3rd July. Despite missing
all of their forward line players on the first day of the Cup weekend
and the arrival of just one of the forwards for the second days play,
the team managed to bring home youth floorball’s biggest prize.
The final was particularly tense as all of the 15 year olds making
up most of both teams have only one chance of winning the Cup before
leaving youth Floorball at 16 years old to join the regional adult
leagues. Photos (and eventually some video) can be found on the PHOTOS
page.
Many thanks to the GBFUA for organising the event and all the club
staff and parents who came to Gloucester to support and help out with
the team, and to St Briavels castle where we stayed over the weekend
for putting up with the noise!
Fireball's Win the 2011 Youth League
The Fireballs A team continued their unbeaten record on 26th June
and won the youth league trophy. The final match that sealed victory
was 5-4 win over the Ilmington Eagles in a tight match despite losing
their first goalkeeper and several other players to non-floorball
injuries. The very last match was academic and was converted into
a friendly with several players joining in for fun including a GB
adult international player who had been referring the event.

2010 World Cup Match Report + Photos from our
FUFC Reporter:
We found our way to the Arena in Helsinki by spotting trams full
of floorball fans kitted out with with Finnish flags and Czech shirts.
We piled off the trams with the crowd and trudged across a field of
fallen snow, ignoring the temperature of -13C in expectation of a
World Cup final to remember.
As we walked into the Hartwall Arena we immediately felt the atmosphere,
buzzing with excitement and anticipation amongst the fans inside.
The rink seemed to be set deep into the ground with rows and rows
of seats piling up skyward around it.
In the first match of the day (Switzerland v Czech Republic playing
for 3rd place) the Swiss quickly scored 2 goals, darting around the
Czech players with ease. But in the second period the Czechs elevated
their game to a new level and pushed the Swiss back, scoring several
quick goals. Soon the Swiss lost their passion and pace and were continuously
beaten by the Czechs until the game reached a climax at 7-2. In desperation
the Swiss exchanged their goal keeper for an extra outfield player
but lost a goal to looping pass over the heads of the Swiss team directly
into the empty net. Strangely the Swiss left their goalie off even
when the Czechs won a free hit shortly after, costing them yet another
goal to exactly the same type of high shot. The final score was 9-3
to Czechs, leaving the Swiss looking really cheesed off.
After winning 6 of the last 7 World Floorball Cups, Sweden was trying
to recover ‘their’ trophy that Finland took 2 years ago.
The first period was very fast paced and after just 25 seconds Sweden
hit the Finnish post, maybe making the Finnish crowd doubt that they
could really secure that second victory, but the Finns amazing level
of ball control and passing let them swiftly dart around the Swedes
and score two impressive goals by the end of the first period.
The start of the second period was slightly calmer letting the Swedes
score during a brisk counter attack. But this was short lived when
the Finns displayed an amazing passion and speed, scoring two more
goals, one coming from the Finnish Captain in the form of a brilliant
drag shot postponed until he had a clear shot through the legs of
the squatting Swedish defender.
The third period was the best of all with the level of competitiveness
between the two teams huge. When Finland scored again the crowds rose
and cheered in a massive roar. But they were quickly sent back to
the edge of their seats when Finland let their guard down letting
the Swedes grab a goal back. Next, Sweden, trying to win back control
of the game exchanged their goalie for a forward. This was quickly
denounced as a bad decision when the Finns scored by flicking the
ball over the heads of their opponents leaving the Swedes gobsmacked.
After that the Finns attacked the Sweden for one last time scoring
the final goal effectively ending the tournament. The final score
was 6-2. The Swedes last act was an unmistakable look of disappointment
as Finland was handed the trophy for the only second time ever.

Gloucester GL Centre T7 Tournament 10th May
The Farnham Fireballs left the Gloucester GL Centre with a win, a draw
and a loss from their matches.
First up for the Fireballs were the
Hawks but Farnham were soon a goal behind after their opponents were
quickest to react to a throw out from Fireballs goalie George Saunders.
However Farnham levelled after Josh Purnell’s neat pass picked out Roope
Rantala to convert. Shortly before the break Hawks regained the lead with
what appeared to be an illegal high stick and went further ahead early in
the second period after the Fireballs defence was unable to clear their
lines. Farnham reduced the arrears after good work from Roope Rantala
behind the Hawks goal set up Purnell to slot home but despite further
pressure on the Hawks goal the Fireballs were unable to stop their
opponents from winning by four goals to two.
The second match pitted
Farnham against the Hawkettes who took the lead with a controversial shot
that didn’t appear to cross the goaline. This seemed to put the Fireballs
off their stride and after the Hawkettes scored twice in quick succession
to take a 3-0 lead Fireballs Finnish Head Coach Rami Rantala called a
time-out. From the restart the Fireballs responded in a positive manner
and Andrew Field led the way with a three minute hat-trick to level the
match. 3-3 quickly became 7-3 in Farnham’s favour with Purnell, Roope
Rantala, Sebastian Foster and George Bradford-Smith all notching. A Roope
Rantala ‘special’ from the halfway line sandwiched between two Hawkettes
goals made it 8-5 but then the Fireballs ran away with the match. Field
set up Purnell with his second goal and just to prove his last goal from
halfway was no fluke Roope Rantala replicated his earlier effort. The
youngest player in the Fireballs squad, Louis Goodman, scored his first
ever goal and Field with his fourth of the game made it 12-5. A neat
passing move involving Foster, Johnny Daines and Roope Rantala added one
more to the total before the final whistle sounded. Of particular
satisfaction was the impressive way in which the Fireballs defence of
Thomas Adams, Sam Adler, Santtu Rantala and Daines reacted after finding
themselves three goals down at the start of this game.
Cobras provided
the Fireballs with their final game of the day and unfortunately Farnham
found themselves having to play catch-up for the third time as their
opponents established a two-goal lead. Fireballs heads didn’t drop though,
typified by a tireless display from Peter Halkett, as firstly Purnell, who
kept up his record of scoring in every game and a deflected shot from
Roope Rantala, again from the halfway line, put the team’s level at 2-2.
There was no further score in this game due in part to some good saves
from Saunders in the Fireballs goal.
All roads now lead to the
Nationals in July where the Fireballs are quietly confident they will
better last year’s sixth place.
In February 2009, the Farnham Fireballs were
invited to take part in the Gloucester floorball League at the GL1 Centre
after a side pulled out of the event. The League is divided into two
divisions, one for school years 6,7 & 8 and another for 8, 9 and 10.
Their first match was a birth by fire for the Farnham team coming up
against one of the best teams in the junior floorball League, the Arrows
from Illmington. The Arrows' opening goal demonstrated their flare with
their top shooter unleashing a drag shot around a Fireballs defender to
place the ball neatly in the top corner of the net. However the Fireballs
stuck to the game plan and managed to come back from 2-4 down to draw the
match 4-4, Roope Rantala scoring all the Fireballs' goals. This was a
remarkable result against such an experienced League team and drew several
comments from the event organisers. Match 2 was a hard fought 3-0 victory
against the Hawkettes with Andrew Field 2, and Peter Halket scoring in the
last period of the game.
